OMSA to Host First Gen Graduation and Celebration

First Generation members of the class of 2023 are invited to celebrate their graduation on April 12 at 4 p.m. in Corns 312.

The event is being held by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, and those that attend will receive a graduation stole.

According to OWU’s website, one is considered a First Generation student when neither of their parents have completed a four-year college degree. As of fall 2022, nineteen percent of students enrolled at OWU were first generation students.

In order to support this portion of students, faculty, staff, and students make up the First-Gen Advisory Board (FGAB). The board “strives to foster and deepen institutional support for first-generation students at OWU,” and hopes that students can thrive, rather than simply complete their degree here at OWU.

The FGAB hosts events for the First Generation students on campus, to foster a sense of community and support for one another. Along with direct work with students, FGAB also works with faculty and staff of various offices and departments on campus that are hoping to support First Generation students.
