A Timeless Presence: Samuel 'Gustav' Roberts and the Art of Individuality

At first glance, Samuel "Gustav" Roberts looks as if he has stepped out of another century. With meticulously tailored waistcoats, high-collared shirts, and elegantly draped coats, his presence at Ohio Wesleyan University is nothing short of captivating.

Every day, Gustav embodies an era long past, donning Victorian and Edwardian fashion with an authenticity and commitment that turns heads and sparks curiosity.

For Gustav, this isn’t simply an aesthetic choice—it’s a way of life. His journey into historical fashion started early, influenced by a childhood love for Batman comics and Sherlock Holmes stories.

"I always loved how all the villains were the best dressed ones," he shared, recalling how characters like The Penguin and his admiration for Victorian upper-class fashion shaped his style.

Over time, what began as an interest in historical aesthetics gradually transformed into a full-fledged commitment.

Crafting an Identity—Stitch by Stitch

Unlike most fashion enthusiasts, Gustav doesn’t rely solely on thrift stores or vintage boutiques. Many of his garments are hand-sewn, a skill he honed with the help of his grandmother, who had experience making Civil War reenactment uniforms.

"I got a pattern for Victorian-era pants—the kind that has the high, fishtail back for suspenders—and we started making pants there," he said, reflecting on the time he spent with her during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sourcing materials is no easy task. "I mainly shop for fabrics online," Gustav noted, adding that his experience working at Joann’s made him realize how modern fabrics often lack the quality of historical textiles. He often repurposes antique fabrics and works with specialty textile shops to maintain authenticity.

A Statement Beyond Fashion

Dressing in Victorian attire is not simply about nostalgia—it is a profound expression of identity.

"In my head, I see it as just one really big art project," Gustav explained. He views his self-expression as performance art, where the act of dressing up is both personal and subversive in a time when modern fashion prioritizes comfort and mass production.

"Why are we going into the whole metaverse thing of making everything virtual? You are alive—just make the world your video game," he remarked, emphasizing his belief that everyday life should be approached with creativity and individuality.

Of course, not everyone understands. Gustav has encountered skepticism, confusion, and even the occasional jeer.

"Some people find it amusing, others admire it. But ultimately, how others perceive me is not my concern."

He remains steadfast, exuding a quiet confidence that makes it clear—this is not a costume, but an extension of who he is.

Finding a Place in the Present

At OWU, Gustav’s presence has become a familiar and cherished part of campus life. "The reactions are generally positive," he said with a smile. "Some students are intrigued, some ask for fashion advice, and others simply accept it as part of the OWU tapestry."

He appreciates the open-mindedness of the community, even if historical fashion enthusiasts remain rare. "Individuality seems to be encouraged here, and that’s refreshing."

Still, Gustav acknowledges the challenges of standing out. He has faced misjudgments and stereotypes, including assumptions about his political beliefs simply because he wears a suit.

"I’ve had multiple people assume that I’m Republican, but it’s like—have you seen my bag?" he joked, pointing out the irony in such assumptions.

He recognizes the historical ties between classism and fashion but believes in breaking outdated rules. "People should be creative and break rules."

Looking Ahead

Despite his deep connection to the past, Gustav’s outlook is forward-thinking. He envisions continuing his dedication to historical fashion throughout his life, though his style may evolve within historical parameters.

"I honestly do not know if this is my final form or not," he admitted, reflecting on his past transition from newsboy-inspired fashion to his current Edwardian aesthetic.

His advice to those hesitant to embrace their unique fashion sense? "Start small. Incorporate pieces that resonate with you. Confidence is key. The moment you stop dressing for others and start dressing for yourself, everything changes."

Samuel "Gustav" Roberts walks among us, a living testament to the idea that self-expression knows no bounds—not even time.

His unwavering dedication to his personal style is not just an aesthetic choice, but a philosophy, one that reminds us all to embrace what makes us feel truly ourselves.
