Smith dining is one of the most prominent dining options on the Ohio Wesleyan University campus. Outside of the Hamilton-Williams Campus center, it is the only spot on campus that provides students with cafeteria-style dining and a variety of options that remain inclusive to those with dietary restrictions such as gluten-free, vegetarian, and dairy-free options.
One of the main attractions of Smith Hall’s dining is their late-night dining services. From the hours of 10 pm to 4 am, students can select from a variety of food options that only require a meal swipe. Judging by the consistently long lines, it seems to remain popular among the student body since it was first introduced in the fall of 2023.
But does the quality and service meet students’ expectations?
One student raised concerns about the lack of options or consistent quality of food production during late-night.
Rheigna Gulatte, a junior at OWU, gave input on what she feels does and does not work for the late-night dining experience.
“I do wish there was more consistency in the quality of food production. I really enjoy the variety of options that are offered and that the menu stays consistent so I never have to wonder if they’re going to have a specific item, but that same consistency I feel is lacking in the quality from night to night,” said Gulatte.
This sentiment regarding the consistency and quality of OWU’s dining hall has not been echoed by students exclusively. According to a ranking published by The Princeton Review, Ohio Wesleyan landed at # 5 for campuses in the United States with the lowest quality cuisine.
Concern was also raised regarding the lack of options and variety for those with dietary restrictions.
“If you aren’t going to order a salad or modify the breakfast sandwich to your preference, you honestly arent left with a large of variety options if you’re someone who is vegan or gluten-free, which I think could be restrictive to students on campus who have dietary restrictions,” said Ashley Barney, an OWU junior.
However, some students attest that Smith late-night is something that they look forward to most when it comes to campus dining. Both for the quality and camaraderie.
“I love coming down to see my friends and just relax after dealing with classes and coursework all day, it’s honestly the part of my day I look forward to the most,” said Barney.
Outside of the quality of food production and the consistent menu items, a positive aspect of the late-night experience that stuck with students the most came from the staff directly.
“The AVI staff are always extremely kind and patient during the late-night rush. In my experience they’ve always been friendly, smiling and greeting each student and asking how their nights are going. It creates a really comforting atmosphere,” said Kelsea Cooper, a junior at OWU.
