2 Sports, 2 Semesters: A Look Into the Lives of Dual Sport Athletes

Balancing school work and athletics is no easy task for anyone. It takes a lot of time management and dedication to both your sport and school to be successful.

Sammy Stoner, a finance major and dual sport athlete, has been able to balance a season of football and a season of baseball while still crushing it in the classroom.

Stoner is a well accoladed athlete, achieving 2nd team all-conference 2023 Baseball, 3rd team all-conference 2024, and 2nd team all-conference 2023. On top of this, he was also on the OWU Dean's List in the Spring of 2022, 2023, 2024, and fall of 2023.

There are only so many hours in the day to get everything that needs to be done, done. I wanted to see what goes into Stoner’s recipe for success.

Sammy's response “It's all about time management and staying focused on the bigger picture. I make sure to get my studies done, but when it’s time to hit the field, it's time to have fun and play like it's my last game ever,” he says. “It’s tough, but I’ve learned that consistency and discipline are key to succeeding in both sports and academics.”

Many student-athletes struggle to find a balance similar to that which Stoner demonstrates. His accomplishments in the classroom and on the field are credit to his dedication, willpower, and time management abilities.

Sammy Stoner is proof that you can succeed in all areas if you remain organized and focused on education without compromising the things you enjoy. Because of his commitment to both studies and sports, Sammy stands out as an exceptional student-athlete at Ohio Wesleyan University.
